HISTORY HIGHLIGHTS
1898 -- Flanner Guild established after Frank Flanner donated a small portion of land to the Charity Organization Society1903 -- Name changed to Flanner House
1924 -- Became a charter member of the Indianapolis Community Fund (forerunner to United Way of Central Indiana)
1935 -- Incorporated as a not-for-profit organization
1946 -- Flanner Homes, Inc. founded
1987 -- Merged with Community Centers of Indianapolis
- Dr. Cleo W. Blackburn was personally recruited by Frank Flanner eight years after he arrived in Indianapolis as the grandson of a slave, with $7.19 in his pocket.
- Flanner House offices were located in Chicago and Washington, D.C.
- First in country to offer neighborhood health center services.
- National acclaim and funding received from Reader's Digest, Survey Graphics; Rockefeller & Rosenwald Foundations
- $50,000 raised for building in 1941
- Canning operation at 6,000 daily in 1949
- Eleanor Roosevelt made a personal visit on Nov. 14, 1957
- Flanner House had ties to Lockefield Gardens library project
- Bill Hudnut joined the board in 1969
- Planned youth sports activities were the forerunner to the Scarborough Peace Games in the 1970s
- Building committee raised $1.3 million (Jack Snyder, member)
- Service goal of current building: 200,000 annually
- Resident facility for the deaf in 1973
